Planning your 2025 trip to New Zealand? Stay informed about the latest travel requirements, entry regulations, and what you need to prepare for a smooth arrival in Aotearoa.
NZeTA Requirement
The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) remains mandatory for all visa waiver country citizens and cruise passengers. This requirement, introduced in 2019, continues to be a key part of New Zealand's border security system.
Who Needs an NZeTA in 2025?
- Citizens of 60+ visa waiver countries including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and most European nations
- All cruise ship passengers visiting New Zealand ports, regardless of nationality
- Travelers transiting through New Zealand airports
Apply for your NZeTA through our online application portal at least 72 hours before departure.
Valid Passport Requirements
Your passport must meet these criteria:
- Valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from New Zealand
- In good condition with readable information and photo
- Contain at least one blank page for entry stamps
- Be the same passport used in your NZeTA application
International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL)
The IVL fee of $35 NZD continues to be required for most visitors. This levy funds tourism infrastructure and conservation projects. The IVL is included in your NZeTA application fee and is valid for the same 2-year period.
Health and Medical Requirements
No Specific Vaccinations Required
New Zealand doesn't require specific vaccinations for most travelers. However, it's recommended to ensure your routine vaccinations are up-to-date, including measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination.
Health Declaration
You may be required to complete a health declaration upon arrival if you've visited certain countries or have specific health conditions.
Travel Insurance
While not mandatory, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. New Zealand's healthcare system charges full fees for visitors, and medical treatment can be expensive.
Biosecurity Requirements
New Zealand has strict biosecurity laws to protect its unique environment:
- Declare all food, plant, and animal products on your arrival card
- Outdoor equipment (hiking boots, camping gear, golf clubs) must be clean and free of soil
- Failure to declare items can result in significant fines
Customs and Duty-Free Allowances
Travelers aged 17 and over may bring duty-free:
- 4.5 liters of wine or beer
- Three bottles of spirits (max 1.125 liters each)
- 50 cigarettes or 50 grams of tobacco
- Goods up to NZ$700 in value
Financial Requirements
You may be asked to show proof of:
- Sufficient funds for your stay (approximately NZ$1,000 per month or NZ$400 per month with accommodation already paid)
- Return or onward travel ticket
Length of Stay
NZeTA holders can stay in New Zealand for up to 90 days per visit. Multiple entries are allowed within the 2-year validity period, but each visit is limited to 90 days.
Work Restrictions
An NZeTA does not allow you to work in New Zealand. If you plan to work, you must apply for an appropriate work visa before arrival.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at a New Zealand airport, you'll need to:
- Present your passport (with your NZeTA electronically linked)
- Complete an arrival card
- Go through passport control (use eGates if eligible)
- Collect baggage and proceed through customs
- Declare any biosecurity items for inspection
Digital Services
New Zealand uses advanced digital systems:
- SmartGate for eligible travelers (automated passport control)
- Electronic linking of NZeTA to passports
- Digital customs declarations
COVID-19 Updates
As of 2025, most COVID-19 travel restrictions have been removed. However, it's advisable to check the latest health guidelines before traveling as requirements can change.
